Yes it's the stations with the longest name but how did it come about? Originally the village name was pwllgwyngyll in the 16th century Llanfair was added to the name by the villagers the name was from the parish church St Mary's (Llanfair). Today the village is called locally Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG, likewise the station was referred to as Llanfair PG and earlier on railway documents was just Llanfair.
The much longer name of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is said to incorporates various local place names. According to Sir John Morris-Jones - a Welsh grammarian, academic and poet - a clever local tailor created the long name for the village’s railway station in 1869 as part of a publicity stunt.
Llanfair PG Hornby Station & Sidings
Llanfair PG is an important station on my vintage Hornby layout because between it and Britannia Bridge is Llantysilio Junction and Llantysilio Station is where standard gauge meets narrow gauge and the start of Llantysilio Light Railway (see my other videos).
The making of the Hornby Llanfair PG Station and development of the layout for Llanfair PG Junction proved difficult for a few reasons but mainly because of the area I had to work with only 8 feet by 4 feet, which meant I had to squash it all up somewhat.
You will note there is no points to the west end of the station platform from the mainline to the sidings also the wagon turntable is behind the station and not to its side. However, lucky for me the vintage Hornby railways never did match exactly what they were portraying even on O Gauge none of the stations look like the stations they were supposed to be and locomotives often did not have the right amount of wheels.
What with no consistency in scale and an almost comic strip approach to lithographic printing, I feel and think this is what makes vintage Hornby O Gauge attractive and appealing to us collectors and enthusiasts. Creating something new in the Hornby O Gauge style is not that easy but because of the Hornby artistic licence to do what you want as far as looks and scale are concerned I think I have done a good job.
